I'm a produced screenwriter-cum-newbie-novelist living in Scotland. I undertook an MFA in Screenwriting at the Scottish Screen Academy in 2016 but due to a change in my work pattern I had to pull out midway. Despite this, I was lucky enough to get selected for the Moonstone International Screenwriters Lab in Halle, Germany, where my thesis project MAGUIRE was optioned by Polaris Productions in London under the direction of award winning French filmaker, Sylvie Bolioli.
I worked with the company for almost a year trying to get the project made but despite our best efforts the stars just didn't line up and we parted company. I then spent a year co-writing a low budget psychological horror with Clive Thompson and we shopped it up and down the country. We ran out of steam on that one as well! But a few years later the Scottish Arts council awarded me a small grant to re-work the project and I was soon enrolled on the Screen Academy's On-line Script Development programe and produced a much tighter version of the script called BURIED. It's based on a short, award winning film script I wrote called COFFIN GRABBER which was directed by Claire Alberry. About that time, a low budget crime thriller I had been working on over the years called LEVEL 1, reached the semi-finals of the Shore Line feature competition which attracted the attention of Sensorium Pictures in the USA.
I met with the producers in New York and after a lot of debate, I was gutted when they decided to pass. Hey ho and on we go. For years, I kept working on a bottom drawer sci-fi passion project called COMING HOME which won at the International Family Film Festival. I later re-wrote it as a short story called ODYSSEY (which received an Honorable Mention at the Writers of the Future Awards 2016) and now it's a novel called ESCAPE TO INNER EARTH which you can download on Amazon Kindle. If you like it, I'd be delighted if you left a review. The novel is an allegorical tale about our place in this big, big universe.
It's a fast-paced read (36000 words) aimed at young adults between the ages of fifteen and eighteen, although I hope its got enough substance and thrills to appeal to older readers. Escape to Inner Earth is a Coming of Age story about an unusual girl with extraordinary abilities and a disillusioned corn farmer who team up to defeat a deep space predator hell bent on plunging earth into its darkest days. Along the way, they fall in love, fall out of love, and more importantly discover what’s truly in the stars. Aided by a small army of devoted aliens, each must learn to give up what they want the most in order to get what they really need – each other. It's commercial fiction for stargazers.
