I grew up in a small coal mining town in southwestern Virginia. I left school in my 11th year not able to read past a 4th grade level. I married young and started a family. When I was 25 I went back to school where my English professor discovered I couldn't read. She spent the next three months teaching me to read. The first thing I wrote was an essay on a book by Richard Sapir, The Destroyer. I remember my professor's remarks. "Correct the spelling and grammar. Reading this was a pleasure.
