Overcome: A Story of Intervention, Rescue, and Redemption: Our Cancer Survivorship Journey

by Glen D. Kirkpatrick Jr.

I think you will be encouraged greatly by reading this inspiring book. And you, like me, will come out refined by fire. – Loren Snyder, Evangelist, San Diego Church of ChristSix years into our marriage Debbie and I received the shocking news I had Hodgkin’s lymphoma. I was 30 years old at the time. Our son Russell was only two. Thankfully, radiation therapy brought remission that same year. To celebrate the life-saving news Debbie and I took a trip to Cancun, Mexico the following February. Two years later we were shaken by the fact the lymphoma had returned. Fighting this second bout of cancer was made more difficult by my episode of life-threatening depression. This was the most challenging time of our lives up to that point. Miraculously, chemotherapy brought the cancer into remission. Within months, Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) lifted the dark depression. Over the years, the radiation therapy has damaged my organs, including heart and lungs. In 2011, at the age of 54, I retired from my law enforcement career, as chronic illness prevented me from working any longer. Although a number of conditions have marginalized my health, it’s the myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) that most limits my daily activity level. In a report dated February 10, 2015, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) states that between 836,000 and 2. 5 million Americans suffer from ME/CFS. This disease is characterized by profound fatigue, cognitive dysfunction, sleep abnormalities, autonomic manifestations, pain, and other symptoms that are made worse by exertion of any sort. ME/CFS can severely impair patients’ ability to conduct their normal lives. In the same report the IOM proposed a new name: Systematic Exertion Intolerance Disease or SEID. Whatever name one uses, this disease effects the daily lives of millions of Americans, including mine. Living with chronic illness is a physical, psychological and spiritual battle. I needed God's help to overcome daily. He provided the support I required, showing me that concentrating on my identity in Christ was key (Romans 8:1). Embracing my sonship (Romans 8:14-17) has made all the difference in my spirit and daily life. Debbie and I like to think of Overcome as a small book with a big story: a story about the One who intervenes, rescues and redeems. It’s our hope reading this will help you draw closer to God and in the process, overcome! – from the Introduction
