2015 SPR (Self Publishing Review) Independent Woman Author bronze awardee Evy Journey has always been fascinated with words and seduced by beautiful prose. She loves Jane Austen and invokes her spirit every time she spins tales of love, loss, and finding one's way--stories she interweaves with mystery or intrigue and sets in various locales. She's lived and traveled in many places, from Asia to Europe. Often she's ended up in Paris, though—her favorite place in the world. She's an observer-wanderer. A flâneuse, as the French would say. You can find her musings on Paris and her adventures on food at http://eveonalimb.com. The mind is what fascinates her most. Armed with a Ph.D., she researched and helped develop mental health programs. And wrote like an academic. Not a good thing if you want to sound like a normal person. So, she's written fiction (mostly happy fiction) as an antidote.

Margaret of the North

by Evy Journey

Can a Victorian feminist tame her man when they finally marry? This sequel takes off from the titillating ending of the BBC miniseries, North and South, based on Elizabeth Gaskell's novel. John Thornton and Margaret Hale honeymoon in a vibrant mid-century Paris when impressionism was beginning to take hold and cafés were the place to be. They spend days of ease in Cadiz with her brother and his Spanish wife. These experiences change their outlook.Back in England, she deals with the problems of modernity and industrialization in a harsh bustling northern city. At the same time, she struggles with the age-old complexities of relating to her new husband and mother-in-law.Thornton is tender and loving towards Margaret but not as sensitive as she is to the needs of cotton mill workers. On Margaret's coaxing, he begins to care more for his factory workers. Both Thornton and Margaret step over the bounds of what society expects their roles to be. This blurring of roles leads them into a new way of meeting each other, more as unique individuals than persons taking on rigid roles.Margaret of the North resurrects Gaskell's feminist-leaning themes. It is a romance. But one set in the context of changing social and sexual roles, as well as artistic revolutions. An enduring romance, a guilty pleasure.
